Since 2007 TfL's STARS accreditation scheme has provided a framework for schools to embed safe, sustainable and active travel across their school. Their annual seminars are an opportunity for schools to showcase their successes and share best practice, and for TfL to encourage schools to progress through the accreditation process.
Partnering with Grayling, Hopscotch provided the educational insight and event expertise to design, develop and deliver a total of 15 audience appropriate workshops for pupils and teachers at the STARS seminars, bringing together over 1,500 people across five days of events. TfL wanted to focus on inspiring non-engaged and newly engaged schools to take the first steps to accreditation, and inspire Gold Award schools to maintain their accreditation level beyond the initial three years.
We began by conducting a deep dive into activities from previous years, to identify gaps and opportunities and develop workshop content. We trained borough officers and facilitators in advance of the event and produced resource packs for schools to continue their engagement after the event.
In 2017, 209 schools attended across seven seminars and 88% of teachers said the interactive workshops were good or very good.
In June 2018, Grayling and Hopscotch were awarded the Local Community Initiative of the Year at the UK Public Sector Communications Awards for the STARS seminars.
