Far reaching sustainability programme

Join the Revolution was launched by the Co-Op to involve staff and the public in its three-year ethical plan. One of the first social purpose campaigns of its kind, it aimed to show consumers that it was the most socially responsible business in the UK, while encouraging them to embrace a sustainable lifestyle.

Our challenge was how to make ‘green’ truly mean something to young people.

We developed Green Schools Revolution (GSR), a holistic learning programme with deep engagement at its heart that encourages young people and their families to embrace a sustainable lifestyle. As part of this initiative, we developed over 200 education resources, organised nationwide school trips and developed a hub packed full of sustainability themed resources, interactive games and information.

5,200 primary schools, 1,150 secondary schools and over 7,600 teachers were empowered to kick off a green revolution in their school. But scale isn’t everything. The programme created high engagement and the GSR resources have been downloaded over 20,000 times by teachers from the TES website, with teachers and parents telling us that children who engage with the programme have developed a natural and ongoing interest in living a sustainable lifestyle.
