Sustainability education initiative

Helping young people learn about the significance of developing green skills

How do you address climate change in the classroom with young people, especially when there is a growing sense of eco-anxiety within this demographic? These were the challenges presented to us by The Crown Estate when they tasked us with helping them to deliver a bold and innovative sustainability education initiative for 7-14 year-olds through two Minecraft Education worlds that they were developing in partnership with  Microsoft UK.

To help young people learn about the significance of developing green skills and addressing real-world sustainability and biodiversity challenges, The Crown Estate and Microsoft UK teamed up to build two, brand new Minecraft Education worlds: The Offshore Wind Power Challenge and The Conservation Quest at Great Windsor Park.

Our consultancy covered everything from strategic insight, schools engagement curriculum advice and  guidance to ensure relevancy across different nations and feedback and input from education specialists. We worked together to create a standout educational initiative that put virtual game-based learning at the forefront, creating an immersive and interactive educational experience.

To further support the worlds, we developed a comprehensive suite of accompanying lesson resources that build on the knowledge acquired from the virtual worlds. Additionally, our 'Taking Action Toolkit' empowers students to apply their newfound knowledge and climate confidence to tackle real-world environmental issues in their local communities, giving them the agency to have their own impact, in their own way.

From the challenge of planning offshore wind farms to focusing on conservation and ecology at Windsor Great Park, young people can deepen their understanding of the urgent and complex issues of climate change, all through a platform they know and love.
