Vodafone: Digital Creators' Challenge

Connecting young people with careers in STEM

Hopscotch created the brand-new schools’ programme from Vodafone – The Digital Creators’ Challenge. Working with partners Vodafone, Apps for Good and Teach First, Hopscotch designed a new challenge which gave students aged 11-14 an opportunity to devise innovative app ideas to help solve a problem in their local community. Apps were entered into a national competition judged by Vodafone staff across the country. Finalists won an all-expenses paid trip to Vodafone HQ where they get to learn about the careers of the future, direct from Vodafone employees.

Bespoke App-In-A-Day workshops were delivered in the Government Opportunity Areas to ensure that all pupils, no matter their background or school, were able to participate – and 96% of students in attendance said they would consider taking a STEM subject based on what they learnt in the workshop.

Over 1350 students (over half of whom were girls) entered the competition from 99 schools across all nations.

At Vodafone we are committed to closing the digital skills gap and raising awareness among the younger generation about a future career in the technology industry. By offering programmes like our Digital Creators’ Challenge we have been able to provide school children with the opportunity to really understand what a digital career looks like - whilst further developing their digital skills. It has been really great seeing how well the challenge has been received and I am so pleased that alongside our partners we have inspired the workforce of the future, to really consider a pathway in tech.
