Switched On

Teaching young people to stay safe on the rail network

In conjunction with Network Rail and the wider rail industry, we created Switched On, a programme that educates 3-16-year-olds about rail safety, aimed at reducing the number of incidents and fatalities involving young people. It also seeks to reduce the impact on those directly involved and the wider community.

Switched On is a free education programme, which takes an innovative approach to targeting young people in three age groups (3-6, 7-11 and 12-16), produced in conjunction with a variety of rail safety experts, teachers and young people. With a range of age-specific films, interactive games and classroom activities designed to aid behaviour change, the programme helps students to develop hazard-spotting skills and to identify risky behaviour around the rail network, benefitting them now and in the future.

Louise McNally, Suicide and Trespass Prevention Lead, Network Rail said,

“Rail safety isn't on the National Curriculum but it is essential that children understand the dangers which are present on and around the railway, especially if they live in close proximity to the rail infrastructure. Hopscotch have helped bring the subject alive, so that children want to learn, as well as making planning and delivering rail safety lessons as easy as possible for teachers. Their expert knowledge and guidance has helped produced easy to use, engaging and potentially life-saving educational materials with the added bonus of their team being a joy to work with”
